Do Greyhounds Like Water? A Splashy Guide to Your Grey’s Aquatic Adventures
When it comes to water, greyhounds are as unique as their personalities. Some adore it, others are unsure, and a few think it’s only good for drinking. If you’re a greyhound owner wondering whether your sleek pup might enjoy a dip, the short answer is: yes, some do!
Water-Loving Greyhounds
Just like people, greyhounds can have a range of reactions to water:
-
Some LOVE it – They’ll dive into the ocean, lake, or kiddie pool without a second thought, splashing and playing with pure joy.
-
Some are cautious waders – They’ll dip their toes in, maybe stroll along the shore, but avoid going in too deep.
-
Others prefer to chill – A shallow shell pool in the backyard on a hot day is their idea of luxury. They’ll lie in it like royalty, just enough to cool off.
-
Some stay on dry land – These greyhounds enjoy beach outings but prefer to stay on the sand and supervise your swim from a safe distance.
And then, there are greyhounds who once loved water... until a bad experience changed everything. One of our own leapt into a swimming pool, thinking it was solid ground. The shock of the fall left her terrified of water ever since. So it’s important to introduce water slowly and safely.
Things to Watch Out For
Greyhounds have delicate skin, thin coats, and sensitive paws, so you’ll want to be mindful of a few hazards:
-
Lakes and Rivers: Watch for rough or muddy bottoms. Twigs, rocks, sharp branches, and broken glass can injure their feet. Consider aqua booties for added paw protection.
-
Beaches: Like humans, greyhounds can be affected by rips and strong currents. Always supervise and avoid letting them swim too far out. Also, watch out for off-leash dogs that might be too enthusiastic or aggressive.
-
Backyard Pools: Make sure your greyhound knows the pool isn’t just a shiny patch of ground. If your dog falls in accidentally, it could be traumatic. Never leave them unattended, and think about using a pool ramp or safety cover.
-
Plastic Shell Pools: These are great in the summer, but beware of leaving them in the sun too long—hot plastic can burn paws or skin.
Safety First: Life Jackets & More
Even if your greyhound is a confident swimmer, a canine life jacket can give peace of mind, especially in deep or unpredictable water. Look for one with a handle on the back so you can easily assist them if needed.
Final Thoughts
Not every greyhound is destined to be the next Michael Phelps of the dog world, and that’s okay. Whether they’re lounging in a shell pool or splashing through waves, what matters most is that they’re safe, comfortable, and having fun. If your grey loves the water—fantastic! If not, a shady spot under a tree is just as good.
